Is soft water safe for consumption?
Well, that’s a tricky question to answer. Though, in majority cases, soft water is safe for consumption. However, it depends on people’s preferences whether what type of water they choose to drink. Many people get a drinking water tap installed at the same time when they get softener mounted, as they prefer taste of hard water. In the softening process, salt is not added to the water which is ultimately supplied through the output vent. The process uses blocks or bags of salt to clean the layer of resin present in the softener but none of it gets mixed in the supplied water or in simple words, the water which you eventually use. Also, soft water has high level of sodium, lonely which is different from regular table salt (NaCl). As per a study, water with sodium level of 200ppm is fit for consumption.
Is it fine to keep using water while regeneration process?
Profoundly No. Water softener regeneration process in simple terms mean, recharging water softener. It is essential to sustain the efficiency of the softener and also to ensure that you keep receiving quality soft water. But, people often carry confusion whether they can use water from softener while the regeneration process is underway, BIG NO! If we put forth in common language, you do not use any appliance while it is being cleansed or serviced, do you? You do not. Just like any other appliance, using water while regeneration process is ongoing, might damage the water softener from within, severely affecting its efficacy and often, due to this malpractice hard water clogs the pipe (output vent) by creating a residue layer in the inner walls of the duct and further hamper or disturb softener’s normal functioning. One should foremost allow the regeneration process to complete and thereafter move ahead to use the water from softener.

Water softeners are used for removing high mineral level present in water; it does not have any role in removing foul smell present in water. Putrid or rotten smell is because of presence of hydrogen sulphide in well/s or smell of bleach in chlorine treated water.
